Enjoy the best of England’s wonderful north-east corner with a great mix of coast, scenery and history!
We visit 3 castles during the holiday and also follow the course of Hadrian’s Wall before spending time at Vindolanda, which is located along its route. This year’s tour has been upgraded as we are staying at Slaley Hall , a 4 star hotel set in 1000 acres of gorgeous Northumberland countryside.
Monday We travel north with an afternoon stop in Thirsk, a traditional North Yorkshire market town situated between the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.
Tuesday To Bamburgh where we visit the impressive Bamburgh Castle, thought by many to be the finest in the country. There is then free time for lunch in Bamburgh before we continue along the beautiful Northumbrian coast to spectacular Alnwick Castle, which featured in the Harry Potter films.
Wednesday We spend the day in Newcastle, a true regional capital that clings to the banks of the River Tyne with 7 bridges linking it to Gateshead. We are dropped at the Quayside so you can explore the town centre, the river or maybe cross the Tyne to the Sage in Gateshead.
Thursday To Heddon-on-the-Wall and we follow the B6318 west following the course of Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Emperor to protect the Roman Empire from attacks by the marauding Scots! We make a stop at Vindolanda Roman Fort where we can actually visit the wall. On our return we make a stop in the attractive town of Hexham with its quirky independent shops.
Friday We visit the amazing 14th century stronghold of Lumley Castle for a cuppa at this authentic working castle before heading south for home.
