The Isle of Man is a hidden secret in the Irish Sea with an amazing range of scenery. It has an abundance of rivers and streams, reservoirs and hidden glens. Our base is the island’s most popular resort, Douglas which has a wonderful position with its 2 mile promenade and sweeping bay. Whilst staying at the 3 star Empress Hotel set on the seafont.
Tuesday: We make our way north to Heysham and the three and a 3/4 hour ferry crossing to the Isle of Man.
Tours whilst at resort:
A) We catch the unique Manx Electric Railway from Douglas to Laxey. The line still operates with the majority of its original Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock. In Laxey we transfer to the Snaefell Mountian Railway for a ride to the summit. The ride takes approximately 30 minutes and offers amazing views of Laxey Glens and the surrounding countryside. We return via the Mountain Railway and the Electric Railway and have the rest of the day free to explore Douglas.
B) To Ramsey, a bustling town with a busy shopping street, harbour and beach. Then to Peel, an olde worlde fishing port noted for its kippers. Lovely scenery all day.
C) South Island Tour visiting Castletown, the island’s former capital with its narrow streets, quaint houses and mediaeval castle. Onward to view the Calf of Man (look out for the seals!) and a visit to Port Erin with irs crystal-clear waters and beautiful setting.
Saturday: We return to the mainland and the journey home.
