Sunday To Calais and we continue through France to our overnight hotel, the central 4 star Mercure in Orleans
Monday We continue south with a thought provoking stop at Oradour-sur-Glane. The town has been left untouched as a silent monument since 1944 when the Nazis set fire to the town after executing its residents. We are met with a welcome Kir at our resort hotel.
Tours whilst at resort
a A free day to explore Rocamadour. It has been a place of pilgrimage since the bodies of Saint Amadour and the mysterious Black Madonna were found in 1166. These discoveries are found within several churches, carved into the rock and are accessed by a combination of 216 steps known as the Grand Escalier. For the less energetic there are 2 lifts taking you between these levels (there is a small charge). You can also enjoy time at leisure to visit the quaint shops selling local produce and to marvel at the grandeur of the Church of Notre Dame.
b We travel to the famous town of Sarlat-la-Caneda. Take time to wander through the winding streets and maybe enjoy the traditional market (Wednesday mornings). Later we continue to the nearby Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac, offering an amazing feast for the senses with something to delight everyone. The seven gardens include the beautiful White Garden, the formal topiary sculptures and even a wild flower meadow.
c To the nearby caves of Gouffre de Padirac, an amazing labyrinth of 40km of galleries including an underground river. We enjoy a visit to the 2km of caves which are open to the public, descending by lift or stairs to enjoy a guided journey on foot and by boat through this mystical world*
d We follow the direction of the majestic River Dordogne to the picturesque riverside town of La Roque Gageac, home to the local gabares fleet of flat bottomed sailing boats. We enjoy a leisurely cruise along the River Dordogne with some fantastic photo opportunities including the imposing Chateau Castelnaud perched high above the river. After our cruise we continue to the medieval walled city of Domme. Wander through the ancient town square and marvel at the views across the valley far below.
