Three Hidden Railways of Scotland

Keith & Dufftown, Caledonian and Bo’ness & Kinnel Railway

In addition to Scotland’s lovely scenery, this holiday travels on 3 restored railways and visits Scotland’s finest railway museum! There are also excursions to see Angus and the Highlands and en route we enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Pass of Glenshee and the serene beauty of Royal Deeside.

Day  1   To  Scotland and our overnight hotel, the Erskine Bridge Hotel.

Day 2  North via Perth and the spectacular scenery of the Pass of Glenshee en route to our lunchtime stop in Braemar, home of the Highland Games in Royal Deeside. We then continue past the Balmoral Estate and follow the pretty River Dee to Aberdeen, our base for 4 nights. This evening we have a Welcome Talk from a local.

Day 3 Through the Coreen Hills and into Malt Whisky Country. Our lunchtime stop is at Baxters Highland Village which offers a variety of shops stocked with Baxters famous soup as well as other specialist food, whiskies and much more! Later we enjoy our next train ride with a 40 minute single journey from Dufftown to the historic town of Keith on the Keith and Duffway Railway. We return via a different route through Huntly and Glens of  Foudland.

Day 4 South to Brechin and we enjoy a return journey on the restored Caledonian Railway. Following freetime in Montrose we visit the fascinating Montrose Air Station, where many of the Battle of Britain Pilots were trained. We return to Aberdeen via the coastal road.

Day 5 A free day to explore the Granite City, with a rich maritime history. Union Square Shopping centre is a 10 minute walk away and 45 minute harbour cruises are available (not included).

Day 6 We head south following a different route and cross the mighty bridges over the Tay Estuary and Firth of Forth. Then to Bo’ness for our final train ride, a return journey on the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway to Manuel. There is then time to enjoy the Museum of Scottish Railways. Our final night is at the King Robert Hotel in nearby Stirling.

Day  7  We return home.
